Why does it have to be "Friend of"? There's a guy I'd like to link to, but we never really got along. Can't it be "acquaintance of"? "Former associate of"? "Shares planet with"?
While the "friends list" is a positively cool thing, I find the choice of terminology to be profoundly irritating. I would prefer "person whose journal I enjoy reading regularly," because generally speaking that's all you can really infer by the fact that you're on someone's friends list.
It's probably possible to tinker with the system enough to change it, but I'm way too new to do anything that intensive. I'll just kvetch about it for the time being.
And, while it's true that I'm not a blood brother with EVERYONE on my friends list, I'm at least not in mortal fear of the prospect of hoisting a pint with them.
