Apr. 27th, 2002 08:55 amGood God. I've got a morning. A whole morning TO MYSELF.
No wife, no job. NO NOTHING. I've got the Saturday Star (delivery at last!), I'm gonna make myself some eggs (NO BACON! DAAAAAMMMN YOOOOUUUUU!), gonna hang around until it's time to head to Orion. Yeahhhhh...
I would like to, if I may, take you. On a strange journey.
Biggest case of Sour Grapes I ever saw:
Last year, shortly after a certain High Profile Awards Ceremony, I joined the mailing list of a respected SF author (at least I hear they are respected).
Anyway, said author had lost the High Profile Award for Best Novel.
Said Author took it with probably as much grace as could be expected.
Author's readers, however, took it very, very badly.
Author's readers said that the Author was 'robbed'. Felt that the Author should have won because, well, because Harry Potter wasn't Sci Fi enough (well, there goes 90% of my subterfuge) and, hey, JK Rowling didn't even show up! It was just Harry Potter Fans voting for their favourite!
Anyway, there was grumbling and statistical analyses.
Then I noticed something.
Prisoner of Whatchamacallit had lost the award the year before. To an SF book. And I sincerely doubt that the voting public thronged to the High Profile Awards (which cost, what, $900 to vote in?). And the other book that was beat out was probably one of the most beloved Fantasy novels to come along in decades.
Anyway, yeah. The fans just didn't take it well. Which is why fans suck, pretty much.
I'll just go back to reading the comics, then take my shower and get ready for Orion.
