For the uninitiated, each GI Joe figure would have a little filecard on the back outlining the character's vitals and a short pithy bit about them. IIRC, Larry Hama, the writer for the GI Joe comic, wrote the cards, and they reflect how he tried to inject a little soul into the plastic.
Unfortunately, it looks like the toys themselves just got less and less appealing as the time goes by. I blame the bloated ranks the line acheived after a few years. I tried looking at some of the later ones and, well, let's just say that the toy line lost a lot of its shine after '87. I blame Hasbro.
