Probably a Raffi or Chipmunks album. Possibly something by Mr. Dressup. I know I had a Smurfs tape I'd listen to during long car rides. My uncle made me a copy of Bill Cosby: Himself that I listend to with a frequency that could possibly be described as "incessant".

The first album of somewhat serious content I recall buying was Paul Simon's Graceland album (feat. Ladysmith Black Mambazo) that I bought after they appeared on SNL in the '80s.

Still like it. Very enjoyable. Please don't shatter my illusions.

I eventually got a copy of Chronicles by Rush, which I've since re-bought in CD. And I think I've had 2112 in three different formats (tape, CD, Gold CD)*.

Mine was Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas album... I don't know what it was called. I got it with a portable tape player (ie. an off-brand walkman).

Did you watch the beginning of Colbert last night? (This relates. It really does)

They were still playing. Stephen was still asleep on the desk. When they stopped, he got up, stretched and said "This is the Colbert Report".

Then he shaved in the first segment.

Duran Duran's Rio. At 8, I apparently already knew I was gay...

Though it wasn't a first album, I used to listen to my mom's copy of Graceland a lot - in fact I remember it well enough that I used to sing The Bunny to sleep with it sometimes. I loved that album - I will not shatter your illusions.

The first tape I ever bought for myself was probably the soundtrack to Star Trek IV.

It was ages before I bought anything like pop or contemporary music (i.e. stuff that wouldn't have led to being made fun of, if I'd let anyone know I had it). I honestly don't remember what the first one of those might have been.

Actually, on the pop music front, I should mention that a couple of years earlier I had asked for and received a copy of Michael Jackson's Thriller for Christmas. And when I was a toddler I liked to sit in a cardboard box full of stuffed animals on the livingroom floor, listening to Simon & Garfunkel through a pair of extremely large headphones.

It wasn't quite as pristine. We had one of those green braided rag rugs, and some of the plushies were a bit raggedy by that time, and in pictures of me from that era I always look like I'm scheming something.
