If I pointed at a male co-worker who had worn a pink shirt into work and said "I guess we send him to the insane asylum now", would you get the reference/joke?
Yes. It's from the Simpsons episode where they sent Homer to the insane asylum and Michael Jackson helped Bart compose a song for his sister. "Lisa, it's your birthday. Happy birthday, Lisa..."
Nope. (after reading comments) Although I have many coworkers who seem to memorize Simpsons episodes, I've only watched about half a dozen of 'em ever.
More that I've just never made time for it, I guess; there's always another episode on some other time and almost always something I want to watch more at the time.
I do remember, oh, 15 years ago, a Halloween episode with Homer as the protagonist of The Raven, that nearly had greenlion and I convulsing with laughter.
Hmm. Based on the evidence (i.e. the last two comments) military men don't like the simpsons. Or just don't remember the plotlines of two decade old episodes.
My "Remember-izer" isn't all that great at the best of times, though, and I have never been any good at remembering quotes, speeches, or my lines in grade 10 drama.
In the Simpsons episode Stark Raving Dad, Homer wears a pink shirt to work. This tags him as a "free thinking anarchist", and he's given a mental examination, and put into an insane asylum, where he meets a man who thinks he's Michael Jackson.

"judging by his outlandish attire, he's some sort of free-thinking anarchist."
