If I pointed at a male co-worker who had worn a pink shirt into work and said "I guess we send him to the insane asylum now", would you get the reference/joke?

Yes. It's from the Simpsons episode where they sent Homer to the insane asylum and Michael Jackson helped Bart compose a song for his sister. "Lisa, it's your birthday. Happy birthday, Lisa..."

Yes. Yes, I would. :)

It is pleasing that you realized my reply was also a reference to that wellspring of quips!

Though, man, that episode was from 1990. We're gettin' old.

I would if it were a direct quote from the episode.

Nope. (after reading comments) Although I have many coworkers who seem to memorize Simpsons episodes, I've only watched about half a dozen of 'em ever.

More that I've just never made time for it, I guess; there's always another episode on some other time and almost always something I want to watch more at the time.

I do remember, oh, 15 years ago, a Halloween episode with Homer as the protagonist of The Raven, that nearly had [livejournal.com profile] greenlion and I convulsing with laughter.

I would, but a lot of people probably won't, ie non-geeks, or geeks who don't like the Simpsons.

Knowing who Homer is: Pop culture.

Knowing a reference to one specific episode without even knowing you're referring to the Simpsons: Geek.

Just don't remember that one, I guess.

Note: I like The Simpsons just fine.

My "Remember-izer" isn't all that great at the best of times, though, and I have never been any good at remembering quotes, speeches, or my lines in grade 10 drama.

Doug.

I wouldn't get it.

I'd be a little worried about sexism and/or homophobia, actually.

My first thought as well.

What was the context of the original gag, [livejournal.com profile] thebitterguy? I'm not getting it from the comments above.

But of course.

17 years? Yipe.

Simpsons.

Now I'll read the other comments.

Bart would be 29 had the characters been allowed to age.

If I may be allowed to mix my mass-media references, "Yarp."
