But, interestingly enough, he seems to be for him.

And his ability to cut a promo seems to be biblical.

So, anyone using DreamWidth? Like 90% of people who have I'm pretty much just staking it out. Anyone using it as a regular blogging platform? I've contemplated doing the full LJ transfer to it (or to WordPress. I'm somewhat fickle).

As well, I've got two DW invite codes, if anyone wants one.

So, Over on MGK.com there's a regular feature called "Thursday Who's Who" that is only intermittenly interrupted for So You Think You Can Dance commentary (and Jesus, I wish I was kidding). Thursday Who's Who takes a character from DC's brave attempt at OHOTMU goodness and rates them on the Rex The Wonder Dog scale.

Today's feature takes us back to the good old days, when new features would get a 12 page introduction in DC Comics Presents or Teen Titans (which, ironically enough, got a 12 page introduction in DC Comics Presents) or, in this case, Legion of Super-Heroes. The chracter is Dark Opal, the villain of the DC Maxi-series Amethyst.
MGK describes Amethyst's concept as such:

Nowadays the concept of an ongoing fantasy comics series targeting young girls seems like the sort of thing that makes DC editorial go “hsssst!” and then cower in the darkness. “Catering to different demographicsss.. it burns us, precious, it burrrrrns.”

That phrase, btw, made me spit my tea all over my computer monitor.

Amethyst seems silly, if only because it sounds like the standard "magical princess from another world" trope (much like Power Pack is about a group of kids who get super powers form their magical space pony, and a shiny cyber-nickel to anyone who can link me to the TV Tropes pages for those two). But the series was well liked by its readers, which for some reason I wasn't one of. It's one of those DC stories from the past that are not currently available, much like Atlantis Chronicles.

And no, I'm not gonna shut up about that. You can get Camelot 3000 in trade, but not a book that does something interesting with Atlantis? Fuck that shit.

Anyway, yeah, Amethyst was neat.

Well, casting news is out on Thor, and it appears YHB was, in fact, correct when he (that is, I) surmised that Brian Blessed would be a good pick for Odin.

(btw; anyone else having trouble with text not appearing on that web site?)

Yeah, get an eyepatch on that guy and it'll be awesome. Isn't the film due for release next summer? So I wonder how much filming time will be, then post will probably take a while.

Of course, that also raises the question (but does not beg it) of whether or not most of it will be greenscreen/CGI or if they'll have location filming and physical effects.

Edit: Apparently, Thor is Not due until '11.

Another in the ongoing series of joy that is Reel Toronto, it's Exit Wounds. The author seems to go kind of hard on it. I mean, it isn't the worst Steven Segal movie, much less the worst movie filmed in Toronto. But it's always good to get a peek behind the magic movie curtain.

Remember when I did my bit about Who, starring Will Smith, coming to theatres July 4, 2011? And all of you went "Oh, that's so mean"? No one will ever have anything to complain about anymore. With Jack Black as the voice of K9 and Angelina Jolie as Brestina.

Whee!

Busy weekend, it was. Loads of yard work was completed, and the vegetagle garden was tilled and planted.

Only, however, with greenhouse bought seedlings. At this time my own seedlings are still sprouting in the back room (and the naming sticks are getting fuzzy, which is ick). When will I learn, six weeks before the last frost! It's not just a good idea! We also took some rocks, put them in our new wheelbarrow, and moved them from one side of the yard to the other.

Cynra & I did not go see Up! on the weekend, but may do so tonight. That would be fun.

Saturday night we welcomed [livejournal.com profile] mr_weasel and his wife over to Casa Bitter. We had some curry & naan for dinner (which turned out awesome) and played a couple games of Pandemic. I'd purchased Pandemic several weeks ago, but hadn't gotten to play it yet, so it was nice to put it through its paces. We won the first game thanks to a very lucky first draw that eliminated the blue disease, but lost the second game even though we'd gotten more of the game's play down. The dispatcher is still a bit of a challenge to play, though.

Sunday was more yard work, and then off to [livejournal.com profile] pyat and [livejournal.com profile] velvetpage's for fondue and more disesase fighting. You can see photos here. Unfortunately, we only got to play one game of Pandemic this time which, once again, led to the collapse of society as we known it.

I'm wondering how hard the game will be once we start trying it at the normal level, where you keep your cards hidden and there's another epidemic card scattered in the deck. The second game played, which was the second one lost, was lost after a massive series of outbreaks in Europe that sort of cascaded until we ran out of blue disesase blocks. Last night's game was very close, but we ended up losing after the player card deck ran out.

Since gas has snuck up to about a buck a litre again, Cynra & I are carpooling to work in Supercar, at least for the rest of the school year. Huzzah!

In spite of their horrendous advertising campaign (Kingons? Really?) and slightly less horrendous food, I schlepped over to the local Burger King to grab myself a value meal for lunch and score the set of Glasses for the current Trek film.

They are available in a set, instead of buying them separately, which I supposed makes a certain amount of sense. I remember back in '80, when Empire was coming out and my cousin Sherif & I were in a BK for dinner and we saw the announcement that they'd soon be releasing the Empire glasses at BK. We tried to buy them on the spot, ignoring the info on the placemat that said "coming soon".

The glasses were released on a weekly basis, which pretty much guaranteed I'd be going in every week until they were done. There was a glass for Darth Vader & Boba Fett, C -3PO and R2, Luke Skywalker and Yoda, and Lando Calrissian. I think. I'd have to go check the china hutch at home to verify.

They're still very affordable collectibles; my Vader glass was broken by a visitor, so I had to replace it which cost less than $5.

So, still being huge nerds, I figured I'd go get the new Trek set. The crispy chicken sandwich is, well, criminally small. I think I'm kind of hungry again.

I really need a spiffy Trek icon, don't I?

Over on his website, Peter David ponders the news about a possible Buffy Remake.

I could very well be wrong–in fact, wouldn’t be surprised if I was–but I see this as a big negotiating ploy. I think that at some point the producers must have approached Whedon, he had terms they were reluctant to meet (money, creative control, whatever) and so they’ve gone public with the notion that they’re willing to proceed without him in order to gain negotiating leverage.

He also points out that Gene Roddenberry was strongly involved with Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but encouraged people to skip The Wrath of Khan. Which is, at the very least, an interesting anecdote.
