Each of these songs deals with the same, heartbreaking, fairly ludicrous concept: A guy wants to cheat on his wife, and through correspondence falls in love with another woman who turns out to be that wife.

Escape! The Pina Colada Song and Kate Bush's paean to fuzzy hats Babooshka. So, which one do you prefer? Come on, you can tell me!

[Poll #1130765]

edit: Kate Busy is a cover band. Or I made a typo. YOU DECIDE!

As a Kate Bush fan of long standing, I have to make the obligatory comment:

How the H*ll do you ever consider mentioning these two songs in the same post?!?!?!?!

There. The other KB fans don't have to say it. :-)

I don't know who Kate Busy is... some Kate Bush tribute band? In any case, the song itself, even sung by a tribute crooner in some northern Ontario bar, has more merit than the Rupert Holmes tweedle.

The Pina Colada Song is about a guy who goes looking for another woman and meets his own wife. They got tired of each other but through the magic of the personal ads they discover how much they have in common.

It's some of the most horrible glurge I've ever heard on the radio. ^^;;

Kate Bush wins because of the music video.

Yeah, why didn't the song end with them dumping each other and trying to pick up other people at the bar?

I'm not averse to happy endings. It just seemed a bit moralistic, as pop songs go. :P

And... he actually did acknowledge that in the post, unless that was an edit, so never mind...

Both songs are pretty intolerable to me... The Pina Colada song is just elevator-music tripe, and the "All yours Babooshka Babooshka Babooshka-ya-ya" of Kate Bush is an eardrum-puncturing wail as far as I'm concerned.

And this from a guy who willingly listens to Skinny Puppy and Ministry.

Can we re-title this poll as "which one's the least sucky"?

Thank you, as I had heard this song, so I couldn't compare the two. Now, that I've seen it, I'll just safely continue to not vote for either one.

I'd almost qualify it as amoral. After all, it's about a guy trying to cheat on his girlfriend/wife/whatever the hell and basically doesn't do it, but would have if the opportunity had presented itself before his dumb-ass "epiphany."

Well, yes, actually, yes, we do have to say it. But you said it first, and I was glad for that. :)

The Kate Bush song definitely has a good video, but I admit that I'm biased about this. :)

*sigh* You and I have several interests in common and anyone who is a devotee of absinthe gets my vote (but you've never friended me in the time that I've been your LJ friend). That said, I've gotta disagree with you on this one. The Kate Bush song has a bit of repetition in the chorus, sure, but the lyrics and meaning behind the song have a definite creepiness to them as well. That said, I prefer "Coffee Homeground". :)

I hadn't realized you'd friended me - the situation is now corrected :-)

As for the Kate Bush song, I just find it rather atonal and shrill and not at all indicative of the true range the woman is capable of. That's why I don't like it. Nothing about the lyrics.

Hearing the full effect of Ms Bush's voice is not aided by whatever compression is done to the audio by (a) recording her video under dubious circumstances and then (b) slapping it up on YouTube. Bush's voice is actually quite rich, and over the years she has taken steps to fully use the range and depth she has at her disposal. That said, in her early career, she did tend towards the girlish effects gettable from her upper register.

But, really, she's a wonderful musician and is every bit as good as David Gilmour promised us she would be.

Agreed - I have nothing against Kate Bush as a singer. It's just the Babooshka song I can't stand.

I have to go with Babooshka. I think it was my very first favourite song.

Thanks for friending me. Much appreciated. I figured it was an oversight, since sometimes we fall behind on stuff like this. :)

I'll agree with you there are moments when "Babooshka" is somewhat shrill, but I wouldn't go so far as atonal./ That said, you're right, the song is not indicative of Kate's range. Having seen her in concert, I found her to be amazing. The albums really don't do her performances justice at times, not like her live shows.

Geez, that's right, it was David Gilmour who spotted her, and said she would be an excellent musician. I had forgotten about that piece of trivia. *sigh*

I would say that video made me think the opposite. though I'm sure there is an equally loathsome video somewhere for the pina colada nightmare.
