You know what I remember most vividly about six years ago today? The drive home after dropping Cynra off at work in the morning.

I was unemployed at the time, and I remember quite distinctly that the big news on 680 as I drove back home (which would have been around 8:40 or so) was that Michael Jordan was contemplating returning to basketball. That was a useless piece of info, so I went home listening to something on cd or tape. Probably Weird Al or Johnny Cash (those are safe bets for TBG).

Of course, by the time I got home, things had started to happen. I spent a lot of time sitting on the couch, and found myself conversing with a lot of people online. All the news sites went down that day. [livejournal.com profile] the_adzo was still at Microsoft, so I was sending info to him and his office mates by MSIM. RPG.net disintigrated into howls of pain and outrage, and I stepped away from it for a while. I can't remember what the SJG forums were like (those were my two big ones at the time), but knowing that place it was probably kinda crazy.

It's not like you could stop watching. That's the great thing about this century. We can see everything. We demand to see and know everything, and occasionally we get everything.

It's history now. A day living on in infamy.

edit: Jesus. Now I remember what happened on SJgames. This. An extra prayer for the soul of John M. Ford.

All the news sites were down, and the newspaper didn't have a freakin' TV. I was WRITING A NEWSPAPER and I didn't know what was happening.

I had to get reports from people on *mumblemumblefurrymuckmumblemumble*.

I was wearing a powder-blue astronaut ("codernaut") outfit for the opening of IBM's new software lab in Markham, trying to find out what the hell was going on in between photo ops. At least I got free access to the food spread.

They blamed the Arabs, same as everyone else. Many dire threats of nuclear retaliation were made.

It's funny. Today's the first Sept 11 since it happened that I haven't felt particularly reflective on the whole. I was home getting ready for work when The Missus called to tell me that "Some idiot flew a plane into the WTC." I switched over to the news, and saw this hole in the side of the building, but no one was quite sure what had happened at that point, because honestly, the brain didn't want to process the enormity of the information it was receiving and I couldn't tell whether it was a small hole from a private plane or what.

About that time, the second plane hit. I had a one-second moment of "Holy shit! Someone at Kennedy is fucking up badly," followed by the realization that I'd just seen an intentional impact.

I spent most of the day at work watching news reports in the lobby and getting updates from ENWorlders. The weirdest thing for me were the two or three days without airliners. Houston's a major air hub, and on my drive home that night, the only planes I saw were a pair of F-16s circling NASA. When the airlines started flying again, it took me about six months not to look askance at every jet I saw over the city. Kind of dumb in retrospect, I suppose.

There, now I've gotten all reflective.

My school's morning bell rang at 8:50, so most of the students and all of the teachers were in the school, and hence cut off from the outside world, before everything began happening. I had one grade eight run up to me asking if I'd heard what was happening in New York, and I dismissed that and waved him off to class. I didn't find out what was going on until recess time two hours later.

I was in my OAC physics class and cut off from the media when the planes hit. The staff announced it to the school in second period, buuuut that was my spare, so I was walking home to check my email and an round robin (with had a part posted the day before with a rather spooky title when held up to the day's events, IIRC) during my lunch break. When I got home, my mom was watching the news. I don't have a timeline, but I think that one of the buildings had collapsed by then.

I used the dearly-departed Warren Ellis Forum to keep up on everything that day.

Man, hard to believe it was six years ago...

I can't help it! I was born that way!

You should be happy I'm old enough that I actually know what OAC is, unlike spoiled high school students of today.

It was like something out of a movie, except it was happening. And it was real. No hero taking down the head honcho, no credits, no stunt doubles, but real life happening, and real pain.
I know it's cliche, but it does feel like yesterday, and has no aftermath of a triumph of good and evil like a Bruce Willis or Harrison Ford movie.
Just more anger and more lives wasted.

I was working near Ft Worth, TX, next to an Air Force Base, and CAFB. It really hit home when I drove home and saw not one plane in the sky.
I think then I began to panic.
