Veddy Interesting. Apparently, Fox is releasing the First Sixth of this season's 24 on dvd today. (Buy it from Future Shop here)

For those not paying attention at home, the show premiered Sunday. That means the show is less than 12 hours old by the time it hits stores. I figure this has got to be some kind of interesting test to see how short they can cut it without taking buyer interest and tossing it out the window. Either that, or... I really can't see a reason, actually. I mean, getting the boxed set out pronto before the next season is SOP. Getting it out quick before the next season, not surprising (unless it's Lost). But releasing the first four hours/two episodes? Before the show's even done? That's just Crazy.

Crazy, or a chance to make a couple bucks off of slightly conscientious torrent users? Being given a chance to buy a "hard" copy of at about the same time they plan to down-load it? It seems like a shrewd marketing plan.

Yep. Definitely working in anticipation and hopes of beating the Torrenters. It just might work.

Maybe I'm wrong here...

But wasn't there a plan in the works to make some movie available on DVD for purchase in the lobby of the theatres it was playing at? See the movie, buy the movie. I'm thinking that the logical next step is direct mailing: "You've already bought everything else John Woo ever made, how can you pass up his next film? Pre-order now, for 2009 theatrical and DVD release!"

Crazy == Genius == K-Fed vs. Cena

Actually, it makes a lot of sense. There's still lots of people who watch live telly (as opposed to PVR/TiVo/Replay/etc telly) and four hours over 2 nights might conflict with other shows they watch. This way, they can still watch their other shows and then get the DVD of what they missed, and start watching weekly on next week.

Also, after the ending of the fourth hour, people will be talking at the water cooler, and this way someone who doesn't follow the show might be tempted to buy the DVD to see what the big deal is.

Actually I think that's pretty smart. I know a lot of people miss the first episodes and this way you can get caught up without waiting to buy a full box set on DVD.
