question re care & feeding of larval humans

Just a quick note: Can anyone recommend any good books/websites on raising & caring for infants? I know a lot of you have had exposure recently.

Any info on feeding and nutrition for a purely bottle based diet is of particular interest.

The Mother of All Baby Books (http://www.amazon.ca/Mother-All-Baby-Books-All-Canadian/dp/1553350073/sr=8-2/qid=1168445113/ref=pd_ka_2/702-8912351-9656001?ie=UTF8&s=books) (Canadian version) by Ann Douglas (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/702-8912351-9656001?%5Fencoding=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books-ca&field-author=Ann%20Douglas) (author from Peterborough). Also sequels (toddler, parenting, sleep). They're the only reasonable books out there made specifically for Canadian parents, AFAIK.

Any books by Dr. William Sears (http://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_ss_b/702-8912351-9656001?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=william+sears), for general parenting purposes. Provided you're cool with some hippie stuff, that is.

Be advised, most of these assume breastfeeding as the SOP. If you're looking for something that tells you how to mix up formula or what kind of formula to use for what age, I'm afraid I have no suggestions...

If the child's able to eat solids, I recommend Whole Foods for Babies and Toddlers (http://www.amazon.ca/Whole-Foods-Babies-Toddlers-Margaret/dp/0912500859/sr=1-1/qid=1168445356/ref=sr_1_1/702-8912351-9656001?ie=UTF8&s=books), by Margaret Kenda. I have it, I've loaned it and some other similar books to velvetpage.

I would think that books specifically on adopting small babies, as opposed to general infant care, would not assume breastfeeding as the default. I don't know any such books off the top of my head, but it's another starting point for searching.

Ani recently lent me a bunch of books on making baby food. Let me know when you need them, and I'll copy what I want from them and pass them along.

I second the Mother of All Baby Books. It has suggestions for formula as well as breastmilk, iirc. mine is already on loan to my sister, or I'd lend you that as well.

Also, if you'd like an idea what daily life is like with a baby, I could add you to my baby filter. There's a fair amount in there about feeding, development, pooping (not so much of that, and I always cut it) and other stuff.

Best option: Find a milk bank or a donor you trust to supply you with expressed breastmilk.

Okay option: Research different formulas at http://www.mothering.com.

Bad option: Cereal in bottles. Babes don't need *any* solid food before 6 months of age, it increases their risk of allergies and other complications, and poses a choking hazard in bottles to boot.
