My vote goes to any song covered by Michael Bolton.

At least Solsbury Hill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solsbury_Hill_%28song%29) is often still used in its correct context -- to mark a change-of-life experience.

Bad to the Bone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_To_The_Bone), even though it's a shorter song, has a much longer history of abuse. Alvin and the Chipmunks covered it for their Saturday-morning cartoon show. (What's up with that?) It's only recently that Solsbury Hill shows up in movie trailers (http://www.ps260.com/molly/SHINING%20FINAL.mov).

Neither has been as thoroughly neutered as "Lust for Life" by Iggy Pop.

Amen! This one has been Disneyfied! (I believe it's the outro music in... ummm... "The Wild" maybe? -- some bad Disney animated drek recently viewed by my kids anyway...)

My vote would be 'O Fortuna' from Orff's Carmina Burana. Boorman might have had a good idea, and it might have fit therein. But after that it entered teaser-trailer territory and has been used to peddle everything from kleenex to the latest teen-jiggle movie. Gah.

"Whip It" by DEVO.

(Or really, any DEVO song covered by DEV (http://disney.go.com/disneyrecords/Song-Albums/devo20/)

Is there some world in which Solsbury Hill is played more than once every ten years? If so, I'm not living in it. There is no way I'll ever get sick of that song. Heard it on the radio a few weeks ago and cranked it, because I'd missed it so much.

Mind, I don't watch TV and I don't go to movies, so perhaps I'm missing something?

"The times they are a-changin'," B. Dylan: Used in 30-second spots to advertise Bank of Montreal's internet banking service.

Which, I think, is just what the writer had in mind when he penned that tune: Corporate Profits and Reducing Teller Headcount. :/

I give honourable mention to "The Gap" using Clarke-era Depeche Mode to sell their leather clothing a few years later. Just.. no. Leave me my early synthpop, dammit!

If we're extending it to classical music, I'll nominate Beethoven's 9th symphony, 4th movement (a.k.a. 'Ode to Joy').

Misuse?

My earliest memory of it is from a Pepsi commercial. 'Nuff said.

Ah, trailers. Well, yeah -- I don't watch those, either. Jack, I listen to, but I'm pretty sure I heard it on the Mighty Q, most recently (since there was a DJ, and he was blethering on about the song's origins, and I was going "dammit, just play it, already!").

Now, "Turn, Turn, Turn" -- there's a song that needs retirement.

But Colbert selected it as the phrase to define our generation for a reason. Show some respect.

Great, now I have "I Hate My Generation" by Sloan stuck in my head.

Maybe it's my fault, I should take it with a grain of salt.
