So... Sad.

Anyone see The 40 Year Old Virgin? I'm gonna assume someone did, since it was a pretty successful flick (and I know that [livejournal.com profile] elizard100 did; she probably watched it this morning). Anyway, at the beginning of the film, the main character is being regaled by one of his co-workers about a trip the co-worker had taken to Tijuana. While there, they'd taken in a donkey show, and had taken away from it not any excitement, but really a sense of sadness, as if they realized how inherently wrong what they were watching was. It humanized the character a lot, as it would require a certain brokenness to enjoy something like that.

Anyway, I say this because recently The Fight Network, which specializes in various types of hand to hand combat sports (MMA, Boxing, and professional wrestling) started a free sample session.

As a digression, these would work much better if they told us they were doing these free previews so we could watch them and decide if we wanted to subscribe. Maybe something on the bill. Unless they're on the bill. In which case never mind.

Anyway, I turned onto The Fight Network around midnight, and found Honey Wrestling. It described itself as "Eastern European sweeties grapple in a pool of honey". Now, I missed the whole "in a pool of honey" thing, and assumed it was just called Honey Wrestling because it was women wrestling. So I switched over to it and... Man, it was sad. Everything about it. The fact that they were wrestling in a big vat of honey (what a waste of honey, too) with these tired, defeated looks on their faces.

Hell, even the crowd didn't look like they were enjoying it. It was very soul crushing.

I was so dis-spirited by it I didn't stick around for the Japanese Catfighting show, or the British Women's MMA Reality show.

Ah, well. At least they have old Memphis stuff. Classics!

if you want good women's wrestling, grab some Shimmer (http://www.shimmerwrestling.com/) DVDs. They're only 15 bucks each, and the stuff from them I've seen has been awesome. No bullshit T&A, just good women's athletics.

That's too bad! Those types of things can be quite fun. Speaking as someone who has only ever wrestled in spaghetti (and yes I have the video), those types of activities are a lot of hard work because the floor gets slippery, your opponents get slippery, but you can't take it too seriously. It's occurring to me just now that there seems to be a spaghetti theme to a lot of my life. Hmmmmmmm.

Any established women wrestlers or all new talent?

Old Memphis stuff, as in USWA? Jerry Lawler, Andy Kaufman, etc? Later, like Mark Calloway, Jeff Jarrett, Bill Dundee? Or when?

They're as established as women's wrestlers can get in the current scene.

Well I was wondering if there were any known talent (I'm thinking international - the current crop of WWE/TNA women's wrestlers are, for the most part, not wrestlers.)

I consider many of them known talent because I follow the american indy scene more than many people do, but only a couple of them have extensive international experience.

That does sound sad -- but don't let it spoil your love for competitive violence! Instead, let your heart lift up with the beauty of Cung Le.

Apropos to 'Old Memphis Stuff':

A little while ago I saw some classic Wrestling show .. and they had Iron Mike Sharp! (http://www.solie.org/sharp.gif) Man, he was my favourite heel, back in the Maple Leaf Wrestling days ... if you were really quiet you could hear him selling his opponent's moves all the way up in Maple Leaf Gardens.

And that "loaded" arm brace? He must have had that thing on for close to seven years.

Doug.
