That and Stargate is legitimately more funny then Star Trek: it doesn't take itself as seriously and has comparatively more believable characters.

"Window of Opportunity." Great stuff. Coincidentally, I caught that episode on the Sci-Fi Channel while I was sick in bed and it convinced me to give the show a chance. Jen and I are both nuts about it (at least what we've seen so far, the first four seasons) but I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Trust me, if a TV show is a poor emulation of a Roland Emmerich movie, you know it's got serious problems. Atlantis just looks like the CBC version, with actors with bad hair and a token ultra-wooden American actor.

I don't care why some people like Stargate. I don't. I'm quite happy for my friends to like it.

Some of my friends don't understand why I love DaVinci's City Hall, after all. It's a big ol' TV world.

Well, yes, that's exactly why I like Stargate. And to be fair to the show, it does occasionally deal with the question of what happens after the U.S. overthrows a tyrannical regime. In one, for example, a people had kicked the Goa'uld off of their homeworld, but then it turned out that the Goa'uld had come back, severely punished those who had worked with the U.S., and returned their system of governmen.

So it's not complete flag-waving jingoism. Except for when the most advanced aliens in the galaxy endorse the U.S. as the official spokesman of Earth.

And in the end, there's something delightful about imagining a world in which the U.S. military is killing humanity's old gods.
