My God. That's the greatest thing EVER. It's cooler than the Galactus Heroclix and the Spectre Heroclix put together with chocolate. And it's a COMMON.

Barrett's Privateers

A letter of marque came from the King

The last of Barrett's privateers.

Oh Elcid Barrett cried the town,

For twenty brave men, all fishermen, who
Would make for him the Antelope's crew,
God Damn them all! I was told

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's privateers.

The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight.
She'd a list to port and her sails in rags,
And a cook in the scuppers with staggers and jags.

On the King's birthday we put to sea.
We were ninety-one days to Montego bay,
Pumping like madmen all the way.

On the ninety-sixth day we sailed again.
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four-pounders we made to fight

The Yankee lay low down with gold.
She was broad and fat and loose in stays,
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days

Then at length we stood two cables away.
Our cracked four-pounders made an awful din,
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in.

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side.
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs,
And the maintruck carried off both me legs.

So here I lay in my twenty-third year.
It's been six years since we sailed away,
And I just made Halifax yesterday.

Barrett’s Privateers is the only shanty I know word-for-word. I learned it when I went to Toronto Brigantine (), a cool-ass organization that teaches youth how to be crew on a brig, specifically the T.S. Playfair and the S.T.V. Pathfinder. I was on Playfair for 5 days I think it was; sadly I was pretty much too old after that (would that I had discovered it sooner!).

I don't actually have a recording of Barrett’s Privateers, though I think I've heard one. Where in hell did you become familiar with it?

I have a CD of a Stan Rogers concert called "Between the Breaks, Live". It's a great piece of music.

But, yeah, Rogers is one of my favourite Canadian musicians.

I haven't played Heroclix in literally years. I just get them to collect. Many of my friends are just collectors.

The Spectre one is the summer special. It'll be about a foot and a half.

Sadly, I seem to be pathologically incapable of getting British ships in those packs. I've got lots of British crew, but only one British ship from the first set and the set was mispackaged so it had elements from two different ships... :(

Apparently, the junks come in all "Pirates of the South China Sea" boosters; if you get one, all the ships are from that expansion.

Still, if you get two antelopes, I'll take one off your hands.
