What made it a surprise as you mention is that his site even mentioned his no compete clause with WWE ended yesterday, and he strongly hinted he'd be at TNA's PPV this weekend.

What's annoying is that they brought one old cripple out to interview another, heedless of the fact that they have two interesting interview spots that could be used to push, oh, wrestlers who DON'T have AARP cards.

a) HBK turns 40 later this month. Piper turns 49 later this year. Neither have AARP cards b/c they're not old enough yet.

b) The fans (did you note the pops?) love seeing Piper and Hogan show up every so often. It's part of wrestling tradition, having the older semi-retired guys show up and get involved and either put over someone up and coming (like all the guys they threw in the path of Randy Orton a couple years ago) or to put on a 'legendary' match (like the upcoming HBK vs Hogan, or the Rock vs Hogan of a few years ago...)
