I'm somewhat upset that Cindy & I won't be attending SDCC this year.

It was our first trip together, in July of 99, just after we became engaged. It's a great con, really. Their press room is, well, useless, but overall it's quite enjoyable.

If you like comic books, it's a great event. You can meet almost anyone (they've got a great coverage of media guests as well; Seth Green tends to show up in disguise and wander the floor. I would discount this as fannish urban legend if we hadn't seen him one year).

Saw Ray Bradbury last year; he didn't look well (recovering from a stroke, I believe) but it was cool to just SEE him. I constantly regret not getting an autograph from Sergio Aragones, who is a personal hero of mine.

Really, the best bit about it is visiting California. Tropical climates agree with me, and it's a nice city.

Sure, it's an American city, so the volume of bail bondsmen is kind of high, but what can you expect? There's a really good rib restaurant (which was apparently used in Top Gun, but I can't recall any other details). There are palm trees, and God knows, I love palm trees. I have to spend at least part of my life living in a place with palm trees.

The shitty part is this year I'm even listed on their 'attending professionals' list, which is probably the best honour I've never deserved. :) Okay, there's like 400 people on the list. It's the principle of the thing.

Joe likes it too.

Ah, well. Next year. I AM getting to do GenCon this year, and with the much fat freelance tax writeoff (overoptimism? Don't mind if I do!) I'll hopefully get to do both next year.
