It Has Begins!
Jun. 9th, 2005 12:20 amSo, yah, tonight Cynra & I went to see Batman Begins courtesy of our favourite WB Employee.
Quite enjoyable. The origin is massaged into making sense, and you don't get the hoary scene of a nine year old Bruce Wayne swearing vengeance on his parents grave on a dark and stormy night. It makes him feel more natural. And the connection between Wayne Enterprises & Dr. Wayne also makes sense (it's always been a bit strange to me; he's a doctor AND he runs a giant corporation? AND he's superdad? Okay, sure).*
The film does have a high NQ (ninja Quotient), but it's acceptable.
The multiple villains were done well. I really liked the guy who played the Scarecrow; he reminded me of Sean Maher. The Arkham interiors were good, but the exteriors were less good. Gary Oldman was a good Gordon, Michael Caine a poor Alfred (poorly cast, primarily, but that's 90% of what you look for in this sort of thing). Bale was a good Wayne, poor Batman. Freeman was good, so was Qui Gon. Katie Holmes was the right balance of Damsel in Distress and Plucky Dame.
Sequels are not out of the question, I suppose. I'd watch them.
Cute facts: # of "We can't stop NOW! We're in Bat Country!" jokes YHB made? 37.
*Please note, if how Wayne Enterprises and "Simple City doctor Bob Wayne" connected has been made clear, I obviously didn't get that memo**.
** A joke from the film.

Unless they've done some major retooling, Doctor Wayne was never a simple city doctor; he was from a highly wealthy and influential family, was a big money doctor with big money patients, his wife was like all about social improvement and doing charity work with the wayne name on it...
I always understood that Bruce was the one who turned the family wealth into a corporation but I can't swear to where that was ever stated, implied or what.

Date: 2005-06-09 04:49 am (UTC)Admittedly, it's still less confusing than any of Hawkman's origins, and being super rich explains why the car became less lame (Ohhh, a Studebaker* with a fiberglass bat on teh front. Scaaaary.)
*Please note, I am not stating, definitively, that it was actulaly a Studebaker. That's just a real funny word to say. Stooooodebayyyyyyker. Heh.

Date: 2005-06-09 04:55 am (UTC)The problem with Hawkman is he's been retooled so many times, and that's just as the Silver/Modern Age one... I always forget if he's an alien with wings or one who wears a wing pack. :P
As for where WE came from, um, some writer, I'd wager either it was Denny O'neil, or someone under him during his tenure as editor. ;)
No, seriously, I'm not sure if/when it was ever addressed...

Date: 2005-06-09 02:03 pm (UTC)I'm sure he's gonna be able to make improvements on everything and stuff, him being a Sooper Genius. It would be good to see some more detecting on his part, though.

Date: 2005-06-09 02:24 pm (UTC)It's pretty established, at least by the time he's a veteran crime fighter in the comics, that he doesn't have the time to design stuff, and that's part of why he has WayneTech (one of several WE corporations.)
Also, back in the 90's he had a disfigured genius (Albert, I wanna say, but...) doing his tech work, reparing/improving the Batmobile, etc.
