I was sent this article about the Benoit situation. I've been struggling with it over the past week, so I kind of poured out some more thoughts about it.

A very good article. Thanks for pointing us to that.

This has been a troublesome time for all of us, I think. [livejournal.com profile] luciancarter called me up last Monday to ask if I'd heard, and even then we kind of knew that it would probably not turn out well.

The problem with this fandom (for lack of a better word) is that we let the actors and characters get into our heads and hearts. They call it ring psychology, right? Add to that a legion of marketers and editors who seek only to build brand recognition and loyalty on the shattered backs of these guys, and we form this strange symbiosis with the industry and the performers.

This sort of thing, which is devastating when it happens to us directly (or even to strangers, splattered across newspaper covers), makes even less sense when we're watching it filtered through the vaseline smeared lenses of the modern news machine. For the past few days, I've been trying to build a puzzle with missing pieces. The whole 'why' is a question that'll never be answered. Learning what we have about Benoit's home life and his son's disability, it seems even more tragic.

We'll never know what led him to kill his wife, whether it was a long standing burr under their marriage's saddle, or something that just put another card on a house that collapsed, but the truth appears to
be pretty simple: he killed her. And then, it was over. I think he knew it. He killed her, and stayed in the house with her body overnight. He probably knew, at that point, that he'd never have his son with him again, that he had ended his own life figuratively at that moment.

Why he thought he had to kill his son too, we'll also never know. Perhaps he couldn't take the thought that he could not be there with him anymore, perhaps the thought of him being raised by strangers was too much to bear. All we know is that he killed his son too, laid bibles beside the bodies of his wife and child, and then took his own life.

And it's all stupid facts, useless information that leaves us without an answer, only questions.

I hope there's peace to be found for all of them. Because there probably won't be any for us.
