Without having read the books:

1) Watch the movies

2) leave, not once bitching because they cut out the rinsing of the Shire or some shit like that.

The film was good. I didn't enjoy it as much as Snra, mind you, but that's because I'm much less emotional than her. Damn, but Gollums' got the sharp teeth.

This is my LotR strategy, and it has worked smashingly well so far (I haven't seen the newest one yet). I don't even like the fantasy genre much at all, yet I've enjoyed the movies. Go Peter Jackson!
