The Glamourous Life of an Expo Organizer

One of the (few) perks of my position as co-ordinator for GX is that I get to occasionally take a trip out to other gaming cons to network and other fancy things. The best one was a weekend trip Cynra & I took to Origins one year (which is probably one of my favourite gaming events). While I networked she got to enjoy the educational track they offer, which is quite interesting. All I can say is: Teachers get in free.

But that's neither here nor there.

Of course, GenCon, while being the big show, tends to be rather fruitless. Since it's generally 1-3 weeks before FanExpo, I'm either psychotically late to get anything done for that year's show, or so early that people forget about it completely and I give them a promotional package for nothing. Admittedly, it does mean I get to spend much of the weekend gaming and socializing, which is hardly a drawback.

So this year I'm going to be going to CanGames in Ottawa. This'll give me a chance to do some gaming with local folks (I believe I've signed up for one of your HEX games, jkahane) and network with some people, as well as get to see what people are playing in a con setting in time to possibly get some games of that organized at GX.

So, yeah, that'll give me some gaming time up in Ottawa town, which I am looking forward to.

I was looking for a con (or two, perhaps GX) to run a big marathon Descent session that utilzes quick, small side quests (possibly using mod-ed Road to Legend rules.

How full up is programming at this point (if at all)?

Are you at Origins this year?

Excellent. There would be no problem squeezing in a Descent game. I'm not heading to Origins this year, AFAIK.

Well, King Con was just this past weekend in Kingston, but UbCon is coming up isn't it?

I was already going to Kingston this upcoming weekend for Easter, so two trips in two weeks seemed excessive.

I can't see myself going to Buffalo for a con unless I had a posse of some kind. It ain't safe in that country.

There's always a few tables set aside for on-the-spot gaming. Furthermore, the sign-up sheets for games that aren't full are put out 1/2 hour before the game begins.

Ah, I wondered why you collect con info for Southern Ontario. I didn't pick up that you played this role.

I was considering Origins for this year, but now I'm contemplating scaling back plans and making the trip to CanGames instead. Maybe both. And GX in August. Who knows, but this chat has got me more interested in CanGames at least.

It's more something I do for my hobby that's also my side job. There's nothing better than a good con listing.
