'Cause that's the one that finally won me over; I absolutely hated the first collection.

Jesse saying "Miss" is probably the coolest use of a superpower I've ever seen.

I did not. I think I read the first two and just found them kinda appalling/juvenile.

The series never entirely quit being juvenile, sadly.

It did, however, improve. Vastly.

The scene I referred to earlier saw Jesse Custer run into a room where his vampire buddy was being tortured, and as soon as he entered the room, the bad guy wheeled on him with a gun and said, "I know all about your power, so if you try to say ANYTHING, I'll shoot you where you stand."

Custer's eyes glowed red and he said, "Miss."

The guy shot, missing Custer of course, and Custer kicked his ass.

Later, the same vamp pal was holding Jesse's hand as Jesse dangled from an airplane (I confess I have no memory of how they got into this unlikely situation), and when Vampy started the traditional "I'll never leave you behind" nonsense, Custer's eyes glowed red and he said, "Let me go!" and he fell to what was presumed to be his death.

Finally, the two friends were set to fight one another owing to Vampy turning out to be a real piece of shit, and Vamp said he would never fight Jesse, to which Jesse replied, eyes ablaze, "You come and you fight like hell!" or some shit.

It was legitimately stirring, on occasion.

That said, I generally find Ennis to be wildly overrated.
