This seems a bit unclear. Is this Kroeger's first offense with an unusally long delay in sentencing? Or second?
I love the way he can have a BAL twice the legal limit and not "colloquially drunk", and that his lawyer argues this is a "meaningful distinction."
What logic-chopping. It's not a meaningful distinction at all: it's apples and oranges. The law doesn't care at all whether you're "drunk" or not. It cares that your BAL is.
I love that Kroeger comments that the trial has been "quite trying". I'm glad he can be cool-headed enough to make stoopid puns in the face of his encounter with the Canadian legal system.
I also thought it was interesting that the lawyer noted that Kroeger had been previously acquited of drunk driving as a point in his favour.
"Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, my this isn;t the first time my client has faced a murder charge, and the last time they found him innocent, so why can't YOU?"
It's a messy and stupid case - the lawyer complains that there was a delay in getting the follow-up breath samples done, but the reason for the delay was so they could get a tow truck that could haul his Lamborghini without trashing it.
It seems to me that if you're such a high-profile person, just saying "Yeah, I fucked up and I'm going to pay the price, like everyone should" would go an awful long way towards removing you from the "fucking asshole star" list.
I probably should be offended, as some sort of Albertan defense thing, but I just heard a Nickelback song on the radio about how wonderful life would be if we all just cared for each other and couldn't help wondering if that loosely translated into "paying hospital bills if you had smashed your expensive sports car into another car or a pedestrian".
