A quick summary of whatever freaking con I attended this past weekend.

Oh, God. I should have booked today. So very, very tired.

The convention went... well, it went. I had seven hours of panels (including a four hour stretch on Saturday that nearly ended me) plus the masquerade sketch and drinking late with [livejournal.com profile] hazeldean and her roommates (we even got told to keep it down by security, but we were just singing). Friday's highlight was dinner with Canada's Lumious Angel of Mil SF; it's lowlight was crying into my flask in a panel room. Ah, well. The Grey's Anatomy panel fared as poorly.

In spite of the programming department's valiant attempts to allow gaming to vanish in the night like a registered sex offender who'd just had their picture posted on a post, I actually saw a game of Twilight Imperium going on, as well as some kids playing the Buffy CCG (probably bought the nickle starters Pixelbarrel was offering) as well as a mother and her kid playing the Dragonology board game. Fight the power!

Saturday was pretty much a whirlwind. A day consisting primarily of low levels of alcohol (I need a better sippin' beverage than rum, but not quite as potent as whisky. Maybe that maple whiskey from Quebec?), excessive panels, malnutrition, adrenaline, and my pure sexiness. Breakfast was tea and a muffin, lunch was skipped, dinner was a slice of overpriced hotel pizza.

To (over) compensate, after the masquerade (and photos), I scooted off to Shahi Pizza for a combo. Of course, by this time it was almost midnight, and I'd just like to say that I am of the age where you can't really eat a dozen wings and a half a large tandoori chicken pizza at one thirty am and not be punished severely for it. I should have taken my benefibre.

Sunday was much quieter, but the Y: the Last Man panel went surprisingly well. Sure, we only had 3 people, but that's more than I expected.

The two Firefly panels (Firefly 101 and Who Put the Fire in Your Fly?) were both good, and well attended/received.

While it was amusing to see The Conventioneers frogmarched out of the building, did they really need a squad of security guys? Especially if they were just going to walk them out, and not deliver some kind of vicious beating.

Two Spartan costume bits: Kreikor did a Klingon Spartan, which is sort of the definition of redundant. Another pair of guys did something gayer, although the first half or so (before the Weather Girls kicked in) was them reciting dialogue (inaudibly) from Red Vs Blue. Afterwards, they said they didn't want to tape the dialogue since they were professional performers. Yeah, but pole dancing at the men's disrobing club is one thing, and the Gilles room is a whole different venue.

[livejournal.com profile] nexstarman was running the Video room (love the Apollo flight suit), where I got to catch bits of the Star Wars Robot Chicken special. The Power Converters bit? Made me plotz.

Saw many people. Bought some stuff (including a couple Bloom County books and a book on Shakespeare by Issac Asimov). Got a couple Avengers boosters, and am very (VERY) disappointed by how Uniques fit into the new rarity system. I hate being teased.

The Red vs Blue Spartans were AWESOME! They were the second sexiest performers in the masquerade.

Now, I don't really swing this way, but there was a chick in a corset with a fan...

Thanks!

I like the sound of that Shahi Pizza place, I've never got there though. That and the Swiss Chalet, would be two nice breaks from the grind.

I hope you guys had a nice stretch-out at St Louis on Sunday, we didn't end up doing much and were probably better doing it that way just this once.

...to vanish in the night like a registered sex offender who'd just had their picture posted on a post..

And just how does such a heinous fiend disappear into the night when their picture is posted?

Yanno, for curiosity's sake.

[identity profile] creativedv8tion.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah, except usually they don't get to "disappear into the night", at least not around here, b/c between the fact that the local media covers it, and the sex offender has to update their registered address with the state law enforcement, which puts it on a website for everyone to read...

Which amazes me that we do that for sex offenders, but not for arsonists, kidnappers, murderers, bombers or other heinous types.

I was thinking of this one case where a guy was living with his mother after his release, and they posted flyers and were watching him constantly until he turned himself in because he'd feel safer back in jail.

What'd he turn himself in for, though? Was he still doing something?

As to why just registering sex offenders, I dunno. Because they can and people are willing to accept it.

Oh, I know... I just don't get why people don't want to know about them, too...

Oh, ok, parole I can kinda see - if nothing else, usually the prison time is shorter than the parole time.

As for the hotel room one, well, at least the guy was honest enough to report himself. (Or, did he do that just to get violated/arrested again? B/c... damn...)

[identity profile] creativedv8tion.livejournal.com 2007-07-10 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)

That's... yeah.

That sounded like it was an adventure!
I think the costumes are worth the visit. :)

I want to read that Y The Last Man comic. It sounded all kinds of interesting :)

"Conventioneers"?

[identity profile] elizalavelle.livejournal.com 2007-07-10 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to borrow some :) I'm a good book person, I'll take care of them :)

I think I heard a rumour that there were some people along those lines wandering around on Friday evening... could have been the same people.

I've not gone to any Buffy meetups yet, not a member, but there is a Browncoat one on the 28th that I think I"ll be at.
