So my dad sells cars, and even sells them for Daimler-Chrysler, who, shall we say, has the Smart franchise for the US. I say to my dad, Dad, I'm looking for a commuter car, what is your first impression of the Smart?

He says: "Deathtrap."

Your thoughts.

One of the differences between the US and Canadian versions is that the Canadian version has a turbocharged Diesel engine. There are a lot of them around Ottawa now. And will probably be even more when gas prices go up to $2 a litre. In crash tests, it faired fairly well. It does better than most on a side collision, as you almost always hit one of the axels, which are very strong.

Of course, against the average American SUV, it wouldn't do well, but just about everything other than another SUV doesn't do very well.

If there were fewer SUVs, then the Smartcar would be about average, or slightly better.

They are indeed growing in numbers.

There's a Smart owner a few blocks distant from me. Every time I see one of those cars, I'm tempted to leave a business card on the windshield with the following: "You helped my lungs; now let my art skills return your favour!"

Whenever I say that I want a Smart, the inevitable response is, "But they're so small!"
So I tell them that I'm just trying to find a way to compensate for my massive wang.

I'm given to understand that the roadster is actually a pretty good car. The fortwo itself, not so much; although it will get you from point A to point B in a fairly fuel efficient manner, you can get decent diesels for comparable money that'll do the same.

It works well as a fashion accessory...
