[Tell me!] A peck, a smooch, and then?

Okay, so yesterday while [livejournal.com profile] mr_weasel dropped by during a reconnaissance trip into Milton, the conversation during the subsequent conference call turned to [Name Blocked to Protect the Innocent] 's nascent relationship. The topic of kissing came up, and it was at that point that we realized that we didn't know, exactly. what the proper term for the particular kiss that [Name Blocked to Protect the Innocent] had had.

Now, a peck is a simple, dry, kiss on a non-oral area, generally suitable for first dates, pre-dates, and any sort of non-romantic greeting.

A smooch is a lip to lip kiss, brief (no more than 3.5 seconds), and closed lips. Suitable for daily greetings in long term relationships, etc.

Now, a couple steps up is necking, which is extended kissing, mouth to mouth, generally involving tongue and intense interaction.

But, in-between we had nothing. Not a thing. Snog was suggested as one possibility, but it also seems to be generally accepted as a spooning activity, so that was discounted ([Name Blocked to Protect the Innocent]) had a computer handy as we were talking to them.

So, yes. I come to you, the LJ crew, to ask: What is between a smooch and necking? Tell me! Tell me NOW!

I'd hate to make a foray into the obvious, but the verb I'd use after smooch is.. kiss?

Name Blocked to Protect the Innocent? Awww...now you're gonna make us all bother you through comments to spill the beans as to who it was.

They just don't want Keyzer Soze to track them down...

"Wedding Kiss."

The "You-May-Now-Kiss-The-Bride" Kiss, which, while clearly a step up from the peck and smooch, is typically more restrained (since it's in front of your grandma) than the French Kiss or Necking.

I always thought "necking" involved tongue, kissing areas other than the face (not erogenous zones below the neck) and possibly hickeys.

Have you seen Bill Plympton's brilliant "Art of Kissing", by the way?

Yes indeed. And a very grotesque and hilarious short it is!

Where does 'tonsil hockey' fit?

I thought necking was the part where you started to move away from the face/head area and proceed elsewhere... hence "neck."

I think you're thinking about this too much... in any event, I have vastly different definitions for all of the above, so obviously not going to be much help here. *frowns*

This page (http://www.wordreference.com/definition/kissing) had a whole sort of "tree" of kissing definitions. Not quite at the cuddling/necking stage. There's also the thesaurus.com approach (http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=kiss). Maybe "smack", or something?

Aha! I would suggest "long kiss". Not the same thing as a makeout or face-sucking, but implies a not-entirely-chaste, involved lip-to-lip contact, with possible mouth openness.

What is between a smooch and necking?

LOTS of anticipation...
