[Tell me!] A peck, a smooch, and then?

Okay, so yesterday while [livejournal.com profile] mr_weasel dropped by during a reconnaissance trip into Milton, the conversation during the subsequent conference call turned to [Name Blocked to Protect the Innocent] 's nascent relationship. The topic of kissing came up, and it was at that point that we realized that we didn't know, exactly. what the proper term for the particular kiss that [Name Blocked to Protect the Innocent] had had.

Now, a peck is a simple, dry, kiss on a non-oral area, generally suitable for first dates, pre-dates, and any sort of non-romantic greeting.

A smooch is a lip to lip kiss, brief (no more than 3.5 seconds), and closed lips. Suitable for daily greetings in long term relationships, etc.

Now, a couple steps up is necking, which is extended kissing, mouth to mouth, generally involving tongue and intense interaction.

But, in-between we had nothing. Not a thing. Snog was suggested as one possibility, but it also seems to be generally accepted as a spooning activity, so that was discounted ([Name Blocked to Protect the Innocent]) had a computer handy as we were talking to them.

So, yes. I come to you, the LJ crew, to ask: What is between a smooch and necking? Tell me! Tell me NOW!

Have you seen Bill Plympton's brilliant "Art of Kissing", by the way?

Yes indeed. And a very grotesque and hilarious short it is!
